 Explanation Text

 

Definition.

    Explanation Text is one type of text in English that contains an explanation of how a process occurs. Explanation Text aims to provide information through a detailed explanation of a phenomenon that occurs. So, if there is an Explanation Text, then the text must have clear, detailed, and complete content in order to be able to answer the readers' questions.


Explanation Text Structure

In the Explanation Text there are several structures that must be considered, there are :

  • Titles (Judul)

           The title must describe the content of the article or the text.

  • Opening Statement (Pernyataan Pembuka)
           It is very necessary so that the text can present valid and factual information in order to strengthen the evidence in the process of the occurrence of this phenomenon. In the opening statement, write down the identification of the process to be explained.

  • Sequencing (Pengurutan)
          In creating an article, write it in the form of short paragraphs and divide it into several parts. Do not let the reader dizzy to read paragraphs that are too long. Also use the relationship by inserting the cause and effect of a phenomenon or event.
  • Conclusion (Kesimpulan)
          Write a conclusion from the information that has been given.
  • Visuals (Gambaran)
           Attach visuals such as pictures, photos, diagrams, and so on to clarify the content of the writing.

Characteristics of Explanation Text

  • The tense used is the simple present tense.
  • Use of action verbs : do, make, create, etc.
  • The writing in this text uses the passive voice.
  • Using noun phrases.
  • Using technical terms. Technical Terms are technical terms that are in accordance with the contents of the articles discussed.
  • Using chronological conjunctions such as “next”, “first”, “then”, “to begin with”, and others.

Notes :

Dalam menyusun teks eksplanasi ada unsur kebahasaan yang harus diperhatikan
yaitu: penggunaan kalimat pasif dan tense.

Rules for changing Active Voice to Passive one:
a) Identify the Subject, the Verb and the Object
b) Change the subject into Subject
c) Put the suitable helping verb or auxiliary verb. In case the helping verb is
given, use the same verb but note that the helping verb given agrees with the
Object.
d) Change the Verb into the past participle form
e) Add the preposition by
f) Change the Subject into Object

Examples:
a) A letter is written by me.
b) American was discovered by Columbus
c) Macbeth was written by Shakespeare
d) The door was opened by his son
e) The new ideas were suggested by Edo
